Vicki Taiwo

Vicki’s Journey through textile design stems from her travels and study of traditional weaving and dying techniques that extend from Nigeria, Scotland, Indonesia and Japan.

Born and raised in Melbourne she has rich childhood memories of her Father's weaving mill. It was whilst watching the blue hands of the men of Kano (Nigeria), dying fabrics with indigo in the 1970s, that started her on her own path. She returned to Sydney and went on to study the natural dying methods of Scottish Tartans.

In the late 1980s Vicki embarked on a 28 year apprenticeship in Geringsing, double Ikat weaving, with the masters of this traditional and disappearing craft, found only in the remote village of Tengenan, (Indonesia). Where she continues to weave and takes occasional weaving tours to support the community.

Vicki's passion is to preserve the ancient and grass root techniques used in textile design across cultures. She has exhibited her work in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
