Kathy O'Hara

SCRAPTURE

A fascination with designed shapes, an aversion to flimsy mass-produced must-haves and a background in theatre technical work is what drives Kathy O’Hara’s upcycling art-furniture business, Scrapture.

From car-parts to astro-turf, she incorporates domestic, industrial and commercial discards into the design of her quirky one-off pieces. Her favourite thing to make is lamps – incorporating LED circuits into intriguing upcycled assemblages that look good on or off.

“There’s no shortage of materials when you source from the waste-stream – and people continually offer me STUFF – the trick is warehousing such a disparate array of items so my workspace doesn’t become too overwhelming.”

Coaxing something beautiful, AND functional from a bunch of junk – although incredibly rewarding -  is a slow and exacting process and with the constant influx of discarded materials, it’s not unusual for Kathy to have 9 or 10 ‘Scraptures’ on the go at once.

Kathy really like receiving commissions, because they make her stay on task with one thing at a time till it’s finished. Most requests are for funky lighting fixtures, but in recent years, she has been asked to make theatre sets, a portable hand washing station (for a caterer) and a “Taj Mahal-esque” dog kennel.
