SG Emmett and Son

SG Emmett & Son was established in 1924 and has been operating continuously since then. The business made a diverse range of household and farm products prior to the introduction of plastics. The firm today mainly manufactures cake tins. You can watch these being hand made using traditional methods and using the same tools used by Mr Stanley Emmett. MR Emmett started his business in the laundry of his home at New Town where he had to cease production every Monday so his wife could do the washing. He moved to a factory at Moonah and was well known for his quality products in Tasmania for many decades. He made billycans that had a tea proof lid so the tea could be drunk from the lid of the billy. Mr Emmett still went to the factory to help his son when he was in his nineties.

Although Paul and Denise are both still learning this trade and do not believe they will ever have anywhere near the knowledge of Mr Emmett and his son Dennis, they still welcome people interested in old machines and traditional bespoke items to come and visit them at their factory and see the antique (Mr Emmett bought them second hand in 1930) machines in operation. You can watch Paul as he goes through the processes of cutting, notching, folding, shaping and joining the tinplate to see a cake tin (round, square or rectangular, as well as heart inserts) as the end product. You can also see some of the products originally made by Mr Emmett and photographs of Mr Emmett working in his factory. The products he made included jugs, biscuit tins, canisters for dry goods, bread tins, school lunch boxes, baby baths, animal feed containers and lanterns to hold a candle as well as many other products. There are only two manufacturers of this kind in Australia (the other one is in Victoria).

SG Emmett & Son still supply wholesalers and retailers in the Eastern States of Australia with a quality product which will last for decades with proper care. One of the customers in Hobart still hires cake tins made by Mr Emmett more than 40 years ago to people to bake wedding and other celebration cakes.
