Alex Jerrim Wisdom Through Wood
Alex is a fulltime traditional woodworker and operates Australia’s only green woodworking school. His workshop, surrounded by tall timbers and a fern-lined creek, nestles naturally into the western slopes of Nicholls Rivulet.
‘I see my life as a journey of continuing education into the nature of wood and woodworking. When I work wood solely with my mind, body and heart—using tools that predate the industrial revolution—I have an opportunity to come to understand the blade and grain, the tree’s story and through that my own.’
Alex’s studio sits alongside his workshop and it’s here you can view examples of his work. His main interest is traditional chairs but you’ll also see other items such as spoons, stools, children’s toys and household items. Some pieces are for sale.
Perhaps you are more interested in learning to make wooden pieces yourself. Alex offers courses that range from 1 to 9 days where you can learn to work with green wood, connect with nature and nurture your creativity. You’ll leave with something wonderful you’ve created. Visit Alex, or his website, to learn more about his courses in traditional woodworking and bush building.
Alex's studio and workshop is open to the public during courses (see his website for dates) and the art trail. Other times phone to arrange a visit.
