About 45 minutes south of Hobart, Tasmania, you will discover the beautiful rural village of Cygnet. In this thriving centre for artists, musicians, and artisans, is a beautiful little gallery tucked away on Golden Valley Road – home of David and Michelle Rauenbusch-Phoenix Creations.
David and Michelle, who were featured on Gardening Australia in 2022, jumped on board the Cygnet Art Trail at its inception. Inviting people to come in and share their creative passions fills them with joy. David takes pride in beautifully creating hand carved spoons and other homewares. You can also be tempted by the mosaics, wooden and beaded jewellery created by Michelle.
Phoenix Creations enjoys breathing new life into fresh ‘green’ wood and recycled timber. “Our timber comes from many sources. Storm-fall, pruning’s, tree removal, renovations, demolitions, farm clearance sales, auctions and sometimes we barter for or are even given timber to use. The local arborist occasionally brings around green logs for us he’s saved from the chipper, which is always a thing to rejoice!”
Home of the gorgeous Soul Spoon range – not only spoons but salad servers, scoops, Kuksas, spurtles- any utensil you can think of. David says, “My initial salvaged timber crush was NZ Kauri over 20 years ago. Today, Tasmanian native cherry and local fruit woods are a favourite for spoon carving, while salvaged, vintage iconic Huon Pine and other Tasmanian natives are not far behind.”
David and Michelle also run hugely successful Spoon Carving Workshops, to share their passion with others. So, if you’d like to have the opportunity to create a wooden spoon, bookings can be made via their website, phone or in person at their studio and are available all year round.
Michelle is keen to remind us, “It is a wonderful thing to appreciate art and witness it being made. Supporting a local artist can also mean putting food on the table for their family, a win-win for everyone!”
For more information feel free to contact David & Michelle on 0427 015 558, drop into their gallery, open September to May on Sunday afternoons (or other times by request) and most definitely check them out on the Handmade in Cygnet Open Studio Art Trail.
